EDUCATION AT THE ENGINEERIUM

The Engineerium offers the following for primary and secondary schools

THE VICTORIANS - TRANSPORT AND INDUSTRY - STEAM

LEVERS, GEARS, CRANKS, FORCES AND MOTION

SCIENCE - DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY - HISTORY - ART

National Curriculum Key Stages I, II and III

The Engineerium is a unique, working steam museum telling the story of an important part of Britain's engineering heritage within the buildings of the fully restored Goldstone Pumping Station which once provided the drinking water for Hove and parts of Brighton.

Within the museum we also have the Giant's Toolbox Interactive Exhibition for children, with logically ordered interactive exhibits demonstrating simple mechanical principles where children can see at first hand the effects of using levers, gears and cranks, cylinders and pistons. They are then better able to understand and appreciate the workings of the full size and model engines depicting the history of steam power on land, sea and rail in the rest of the museum. A free Education Resource pack is available covering the technology of the pumping station and site.

The Engineerium provides an ideal springboard for teachers and children doing projects on, for example, the Victorians, industry and transport, steam power, and forces and motion in line with the National Curriculum, with particular reference to Key Stages II and III.

School parties are welcome at any time from 10.00 am. The entrance fee is £3.25 per child and includes a comprehensive guided tour; we make no charge for either teachers or helpers; teachers wanting to visit the museum before bringing round a party of children should ring for a free ticket (we are open seven days a week and in steam on the first Sunday in every month). A discount of 10% is allowed if payment is made ten days in advance of the visit. Coaches can park right outside the museum gates and children can eat packed lunches on site, either in the museum or in the garden - depending on the weather!
